Harmful Language Statement

Libraries and archives collect materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. As a result, some archival materials, such as those presented here that address tensions between the work toward women’s suffrage and the enfranchisement of people of color more broadly, reflect racist views that may harm or are difficult to view.  The materials included in this exhibit are presented here to recognize the reality and tensions during this historic period.  It is important to celebrate contributions of women and their resiliency as they worked toward suffragehowever, for women of color, these contributions took place amid ongoing racism and exclusion.
